Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American dream and the new South. He is a young executive and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined.
Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn't commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself. Bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend and best man at their wedding. As Roy’s time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center.
After five years, Roy’s conviction is suddenly overturned and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together.
MY REVIEW:
'An American Marriage' is a story of a young black couple in Atlanta and how their lives go haywire after a terrible incident.
Roy and Celestial are happily married. Both of them are in a good phase of their career and also decides to start a family together. After a year of their marriage, Roy along with Celestial goes on a trip to Louisiana, to meet Roy's parents. This is when their lives take a terrible turn. Roy gets falsely accused and is sentenced to twelve years imprisonment for raping an older woman.
While they both struggle in their individual lives, Celestial finds comfort in her best friend Andre. But then suddenly Roy's sentence gets reduced and he returns to Atlanta to recommence their life together.
What happens next? Will life be the same for them? Read the story to find it out!
'An American Marriage' is a very powerful and thought-provoking story. It speaks of hope, love, marriage, racial injustice, and how a terrible circumstance could tear apart the lives of a happy couple!
The narrative style is beautiful and poignant. It has been narrated by both Roy and Celestial, along with Andre. There are several letters in between, mostly between Roy and Celestial, when he was in prison. Tayari Jones has successfully managed to invoke the emotions among its readers through her intense and exceptional writing. I felt drawn towards the characters and could connect with their struggle, their pain, and also their emotions.
'An American Marriage' is a beautiful story and I feel everyone should read it. The book starts slowly but once you get into it, you won't be able to put it down.
