PAGES COUNT: 213
GOODREADS RATING: 4.2/5
MY RATING: 5/5
'The perks of being a wallflower is a story about what it's like to travel that strange course through the uncharted territory of high school, the world of first dates, family dramas, and new friends. of sex, drugs, and the rocky horror picture show. of those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up.'
PLOT:
The novel starts with Charlie, a 15 year old boy writing letters to an anonymous person who he thinks is going to understand and listen to him and will not judge him. He says, "So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be."
Charlie, a high school freshman, is quiet, shy and introvert in nature. He has a very supportive family and was still recovering from the two traumatic experiences of his life; one is the suicide of his only school friend Michael; and second is the death of his favorite Aunt Helen who died in a car accident during his early childhood, when he met and became friends with two seniors, Patrick and his stepsister Sam. At the first sight, Charlie fell in love with Sam and even admitted his feelings to her. However, Sam considered Charlie too young for her and didn't want him to think about her in that way.
Charlie got accepted in Sam and Patrick's group of friends and started mixing freely with them. In school, he got very attached to his Advanced English teacher Bill, who started to give him a lot of books to read as Charlie was a very passionate reader. In course of time Charlie found out that Patrick was a gay, he also went into a relationship with Mary Elizabeth, a close friend of Sam, but his feelings for Sam eventually led to their break up. Charlie even started going to a lot of parties to explore himself more, began smoking, taking drugs and on one such party, he got so high on a drug that he was taken to a hospital. In parallel, Charlie started hallucinating, flashbacks of all the repressed memories in his childhood started bothering him and surprisingly an shocking truth came out in the end. So, what was this shocking truth? Did he find out the cause behind this flashbacks and got over it? And does Sam accept his love in the end?
MY REVIEW:
The perks of being a wallflower is the debut novel of Stephen Chbosky and I must say that he did a really good job. The author was successful in penning down his thoughts and emotions and has portrayed it beautifully to his readers. The book is written in a very plain and lucid language and is yet very jaunty. I could relate so much with the book and it's characters. There are plenty of lines in the book that can either make you feel good or will break your heart. The book is very inspiring and lively and I recommend you all to read this book at least once in your life.
MY FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE BOOK:
1. "We accept the love we think we deserve."
2. "And in that moment, I swear we were infinite."
3." It's strange because sometimes, I read a book, and I think I am the people in the book."
I HOPE YOU ALL LIKE IT!😊
